Niche reportAmazon US · 18 Sep 2026

Publishers own this one, almost completely.

Query: “gratitude journal for women” · paperback · Amazon.com · about 50,000 competing books

Seven of the eight books on page one carry a traditional publisher. The single self-published title sits at rank 45,923 — far below the rest.

The leader is a novelty-voice journal from 2023 at rank 906, and the review counts here are brutal: one title carries 28,887 reviews.

This is not a shelf you enter with a nicer interior. It is won with a brand, a voice, or a distribution deal — things a blank journal does not have.

What the numbers say

What I would actually do

Do not publish a blank one

A generic gratitude journal on this query competes with 28,000 reviews and loses. The format itself is the problem.

Bring an audience or a voice

Both winning patterns here — attitude and faith — are about who is speaking, not about the pages.

Look at the side doors

The Christian-themed titles rank mid-page with a fraction of the reviews. Narrow identity beats broad sentiment on this shelf.

Or spend the effort elsewhere

Compared with the word-search shelf measured the same day, the return on a week of work here is far worse.

Where these numbers come from, and what they are not

Every figure was read off Amazon.com on 18 September 2026: the organic results for that query with sponsored slots removed, then each listing's own page for rank, review count, publication date and length. Prices are US list prices at that moment and move constantly. Best Sellers Rank is a live position, not a sales figure — a rank read on a Tuesday can differ from the same rank on Sunday. “Indie” means the listing shows no traditional publisher, the closest public signal for a self-published title; it will occasionally mislabel a small press. Only paperbacks were counted. And know the width of the lens: this is the first page of one query — eight organic listings — not a census of the niche. A shelf that looks closed to newcomers here may be open on a neighbouring phrase, and seasonality is not accounted for: gift-driven categories rank differently in September than in November. One snapshot is not a trend.
