A self-published crossword book from June 2026 — three months old, 15 reviews — sits at rank 8,583. The Brain Games volume below it has 3,798 reviews and a seven-year head start.

Its twin from April 2026 holds rank 11,986. Both charge $6.99. The New York Times edition on the same page sits at 29,725.

Caveat first: three and five months is still close enough to launch that Amazon's push for new titles may be flattering them. But two of them, at two different ages, doing the same thing, is a pattern rather than a fluke.

What the numbers say

Brand counts for little here. AARP, Brain Games and the NYT are all on this page, and two anonymous 2026 books sit among them.
Both newcomers use the same shape: 107 pages, $6.99, the words “Easy”, “Large Print”, “Adults & Seniors” in the title. That is a template you can read straight off the page.
Overpricing is punished hard. The $29.99 book on this page carries 909 reviews and still ranks 1,329,302 — the worst rank-to-reviews ratio in any report we have made.

Where these numbers come from, and what they are not

Every figure was read off Amazon.com on 18 September 2026: the organic results for that query with sponsored slots removed, then each listing's own page for rank, review count, publication date and length. Prices are US list prices at that moment and move constantly. Best Sellers Rank is a live position, not a sales figure — a rank read on a Tuesday can differ from the same rank on Sunday. “Indie” means the listing shows no traditional publisher, the closest public signal for a self-published title; it will occasionally mislabel a small press. Only paperbacks were counted. And know the width of the lens: this is the first page of one query — eight organic listings — not a census of the niche. A shelf that looks closed to newcomers here may be open on a neighbouring phrase, and seasonality is not accounted for: gift-driven categories rank differently in September than in November. One snapshot is not a trend.
