The trap shelf: easy to make, impossible to sell.

Query: “meal planner notebook weekly” · paperback · Amazon.com · about 30,000 competing books

Look at the rank column and nothing else. The best book on page one sits at 194,716. The rest run from 267,600 to 1,195,764.

On every other shelf we measured, page one contained books ranked in the hundreds or low thousands. Here the entire first page is effectively dormant.

One of these listings was published eleven days ago and has no rank at all yet — a fresh arrival into a category where the incumbents are already selling nothing.

What the numbers say

What I would actually do

Do not publish here

Not because it is competitive, but because the buyers are gone. The whole first page is dormant.

Use it as a calibration

Whenever a guru names a niche as an easy start, check page one's rank column. This shelf is what a bad answer looks like.

If you must, go paper-only

The one thing an app cannot do is sit on a kitchen counter. That is a specific physical argument, and it needs a specific physical design.

Compare before committing

The same hour spent on the word-search shelf buys you a book that can rank. That is the real cost of choosing this one.

Where these numbers come from, and what they are not

Every figure was read off Amazon.com on 18 September 2026: the organic results for that query with sponsored slots removed, then each listing's own page for rank, review count, publication date and length. Prices are US list prices at that moment and move constantly. Best Sellers Rank is a live position, not a sales figure — a rank read on a Tuesday can differ from the same rank on Sunday. “Indie” means the listing shows no traditional publisher, the closest public signal for a self-published title; it will occasionally mislabel a small press. Only paperbacks were counted. And know the width of the lens: this is the first page of one query — eight organic listings — not a census of the niche. A shelf that looks closed to newcomers here may be open on a neighbouring phrase, and seasonality is not accounted for: gift-driven categories rank differently in September than in November. One snapshot is not a trend.
